Former Vice President and current presumptive Democratic nominee Joe Biden have picked California Senator Kamala Harris as his running mate.

Why it matters:

Harris is the first Black and Asian American to compete on a major party's presidential ticket and possibly the first woman vice president if Biden beats President Trump in November.

The big picture:

Biden's selection of Kamala Harris wasn't a big shock to many, Harris was viewed as the safest choice, and went through the rigidity of the Democratic primaries.

👉: Harris challenged Biden on busing and criticized the former vice president's working relationship with two late segregationist senators, which could become political ammunition for Trump.

👉: With Harris potentially becoming the next V.P., that leaves a significant opportunity for California politicians, who have been positioning themselves for years into moving on to Washington.

👉: Mayor Robert Garcia is viewed by many as a prime candidate for the possible vacant senate seat, along with L.A. Mayor Eric Garcetti and San Francisco Mayor London Breed.
