6 men charged in an attempted plot to kidnap the Governor of Michigan
Six men linked to a militia have been charged in federal court with conspiracy to commit kidnapping the Governor of Michigan Gretchen Whitmer, in an attempted plot to overthrow the state government.
The FBI started investigating the group in early 2020, after watching posts on social media, "that a group of individuals were discussing the violent overthrow of certain government and law-enforcement components." Group members even discussed exercising "violent action against multiple state governments that they believe are violating the U.S. Constitution."
🔸The six men mentioned in the indictment were Adam Fox, Barry Croft, Ty Garbin, Kaleb Franks, Daniel Harris, and Brandon Caserta.
"At one point, several members talked about state governments they believed were violating the U.S. Constitution, including the government of Michigan and Governor Gretchen Whitmer. Several members talked about murdering "tyrants" or "taking" a sitting governor."
In March, the FBI was alerted by local law enforcement about the militia group attempted to "obtain the addresses of local law-enforcement officers," and create "plans to target and kill police officers."
🔸Members of the militia conducted surveillance of Governor Whitmer's home in August and September and planned to use an IED.
According to the affidavit, Fox said he wanted 200 people "to storm the Capitol building in Lansing, Michigan, and take hostages, including the Governor. FOX explained they would try the Governor of Michigan for "treason," and he said they would execute the plan before the November 2020 elections."
🔸The criminal complaint talks about the FBI's methods to thwart the plot, including relying upon paid confidential informants, recordings, undercover agents, combing social media, and text messages.
