7-year-old dies after being hit by truck in Long Beach

A 7-year-old boy was killed after being struck by a pickup truck in the Artcraft Manor neighborhood of Long Beach Tuesday afternoon.


Police responded to the fatal traffic collision at the intersection of 23rd street and Lakewood Blvd around 5:22 p.m., the Long Beach Police Department said in a statement.

The boy and his father were crossing Lakewood Boulevard, as they were making their way across the street, a 2005 Dodge Ram heading west on 23rd Street made a left turn onto Lakewood Boulevard, but the driver failed to yield to the two pedestrians and struck the child.

  • The driver remained at the scene to cooperate with the police’s investigation.

  • The LBPD identified the driver of the Dodge truck as James Barnes, a 57-year-old resident of Desert Hot Springs.

  • Barnes was later charged with felony vehicular manslaughter with gross negligence.

  • Alcohol, drugs, and distracted driving are not believed to be a factor in this collision.
