Bellflower teen charged with murder in elderly women's death
19-year-old Bellflower resident Lawrence Jackson has been charged with one count of murder in the death of an elderly after he allegedly struck her, police say.
The incident occurred on Aug. 2, 2021, at roughly 9 a.m., when 72-year-old Barbara Scott attempted to break up a fight between Jackson and a woman in an alley near the 1000 block of Redondo Avenue. According to the police, Jackson approached Scott and struck her in the head causing her to fall to the ground. Both Jackson and the unknown woman fled from the scene.
Paramedics treated Scott, but she returned home after refusing medical attention. Several hours later she was found unresponsive and was transported to St. Mary’s Hospital.
Scott later died on Sept 16, 2021 at a nursing home, days later the Los Angeles County Coroner’s Office performed an autopsy, and on Feb 28, 2022, her death was ruled a homicide.
Jackson was taken into custody during a traffic stop on July 6 in Bellflower and is being held on a $2 million bail.
Editor's Note: An earlier version of the article misstated the date of the incident as Aug. 2, 2022 and the date of Scott's death as Sept 16, 2022, both events occurred in 2021.
