Child bitten by shark while kayaking off of Catalina Island
A child kayaking off Catalina Island was bitten by a shark early Wednesday morning.
The LA County Fire Department says the encounter occurred at about 7:15 a.m. near Parson’s Landing on the northern point of Catalina Island. While kayaking, the ship was “bumped” at that moment, the child reached into the water and was bitten on the hand.
The victim, described only as a juvenile, was taken to Harbor-UCLA Medical Center, per KTLA.
According to LACFD protocol, lifeguards cleared and blocked the ocean for at least 24 hours one mile in each direction of the event.
LA County Fire requested the assistance of a shark expert from the Scripps Institute of Oceanography.
