L.A County’s Dept of Health Hacked Exposing 14,591 patients' Data.

What Happened:

An employee from Nemadj Research, a contractor that provides patient eligibility and billing services to the LA County Health Department, had fallen victim to a phishing email hack on March 28th of this year, according to a press release by Nemadj Research.

What Type of Data was Exposed:

The data that was potentially exposed varies from patient to patient, but may have included info like the patient's names, address, date of birth, phone number, account numbers, medical record numbers, admission and discharge dates, Medi-Cal ID numbers, time of service. Two patients Social Security Numbers and diagnostic codes of four patients were also hacked.

Remember When:

  • LA Times reported in 2016, L.A's Department of Health was targeted in a ransomware attack that raided county computers and stopped users from accessing data.

  • Also in 2016, a Nigerian national used the same phishing technique to hack LA County's emails and exposed the personal data of 750,000+ people.
