LB activist charged with attempted murder during a protest in Yorba Linda
Tatiana Turner, the Long Beach area organizer, who stands accused of pepper-spraying several counter-protesters and running over two people with her car at a protest in Yorba Linda, has been formally charged with multiple felonies, including attempted murder.
The Orange County District Attorney's office alleges that Turner swung a "wooden baton" at counter-protesters and then intentionally drove her car into a crowd running over a woman's head, and breaking both a male protesters' legs at a demonstration in Yorba Linda.
According to the AP, Turner has a felony record for drug sales and domestic violence.
Turner is facing one felony count of attempted murder, six felony counts of assault with a deadly weapon, and two felony counts of the use of pepper spray by a felon. If convicted, Turner could serve seven years to life plus 13 years and four months in state prison.
Prosecutors alleged that "Many of the protesters wore helmets, tactical vest riot shields, and tasers."
What they're saying:
District Attorney Todd Spitzer said in a statement, "She positioned her vehicle to be used as a backup weapon and she used that vehicle as a deadly weapon, willing to injure and kill those who stood in her way."
Turner's attorney, Ludlow Creary II, said the counter-protesters, which included Trump supporters, had become "increasingly numerous and hostile and threatening" toward Turner and her group, per Mercury News.
Creary would go on to say, "It was not her intent to hurt anybody," Creary said. "It was not an assault… When you are in fear of imminent danger when there is an imminent threat to your safety, what other way is there if law enforcement isn't willing to help you?"
Creary told the AP, "There were actions that caused her to become fearful for her life and that's when she accelerated."
The state of play:
The conflict in Yorba Linda marked the third time in a week that a motorist plowed their car through a group of demonstrators. Following two separate violent episodes of drivers attempted to run through several Black Lives Matter protesters last week in Los Angeles.
