LB Health Dept reports 14 new COVID-linked deaths

Long Beach health officials announced 14 additional coronavirus-related fatalities on Friday as the city lifts mask requirements for events, the LB Post reports.

Why it matters:

The Long Beach Health Department changed its health orders regarding its mask requirements for outdoor youth sports and mega-events earlier this week. The updated health orders won't require children participating in outdoor youth sports to wear a facemask and lower the limit for indoor mask mandates for mega-events from 1,000 to 10,000 attendees.

  • The city has confirmed at least one covid-related fatality a day since Jan.18., according to the Post.

  • Long Beach's positivity rate dropped to 5.4 percent, and 812 confirmed new cases.

  • Los Angeles County Health Department reported that the death rate among people experiencing homelessness who were infected with COVID has "decreased by more than four-fold this winter surge" compared to last year.

  • Long Beach health officials say that if cases continue with their current trajectory, they will suspend the mask mandate.
