LB Man Accused of Striking a Cop with Car in Seal Beach
A Long Beach man is under arrest in an O.C County Jail accused of intentionally striking a Seal Beach police officer with his car.
According to Seal Beach spokesperson Sgt. Nick Nicholas, SBPD officers were responding to a reported four-car traffic accident near the intersection of Seal Beach Blvd and Pacific Coast Highway, Saturday night before 7:00 p.m.
During the investigation of the multi-car crash, the police received another call about a possible drunk driver going north on PCH near Seal Beach Blvd.
At that point, while an SBPD officer was "on foot investigating" the multi- car crash, the drunk driver that police just received a call about struck the officer which police say was intentional.
The officer then fired his gun at the driver “through the front windshield”, unknown to the officer at the time, but two children were in the car.
No one was hit by the officer's gunfire, and a short car chase proceeded northbound on PCH.
The car chase ended when the driver’s car “collided with the driver side of another Seal Beach police officer while he was driving his police car”. The suspect car then zigzagged into another car head-on where it came to a stop.
The suspect then exited his car with a child in his hands and fled on foot, leaving behind his 12-year old brother in the car.
Police were able to locate the suspect, police say before tasing the suspect they were able to remove the child from the suspect’s hands.
The suspect was later identified as Oscar Eduardo Mercado, age 23, of Long Beach. Mercado was charged with assault with a deadly weapon on a police officer, felony hit and run, felony child endangerment for both children, and resisting or delaying a peace officer with violence. He’s currently in an Orange County Jail.
