Richard Young, a 48-year-old resident of Long Beach, has been charged with one count of murder over the back alley shooting of a 40-year-old homeless man, police say.

Yesterday, Oct 4th, while searching for Young near 7th street and Rose Ave, LBPD detectives saw Young enter a vehicle and proceeded to conduct a traffic stop. As police got close, Young bolted, resulting in a short car chase that ended after Young crashed into two cars, one of which was parked, and then proceeded to run away on foot.

  • The victim, identified by police as 40-year-old Juan Moreno of Long Beach, died when Young allegedly shot Moreno in an alley on the 700 block of Cerritos Ave.

  • Police say during the pursuit, "Detectives observed the suspect holding a firearm in his hand as he ran."

  • Police found the discarded gun in a backyard that will be sent to forensics investigators to check if it's linked to the shooting.

  • During the initial investigation, police say the victim and the suspect knew of one another, and an altercation took place before the shooting.

  • Young was also charged with one count of ex-felon in possession of a firearm and is currently being held in the Long Beach City jail on $2,000,000 bail.
