LBP: Long Beach PD Let a Cop Remain on Duty While Under Investigation For Child Porn

Anthony Mark Brown, a 26-year LBPD veteran, was allowed to continue to work as a police officer for eight months even though he was under criminal investigation for possessing and sharing child porn, the LB Post first reported.

Why it matters:

The LBPD began an inquiry into Brown's conduct after a person called in a tip to the National Center for Missing & Exploited Children.

  • The Center reported to the LBPD that a MeWe social media account with an IP address based in the Long Beach area was distributing explicit images of children; police would later connect the account to Brown.

  • According to the affidavit, Brown discussed with another MeWe user how he talked about sexually abusing a relative.

Now That's What I Call Being Completely F**king Wrong:

On May 27, an LBPD detective notified Brown about the tip, and the police didn't get access to his phone until July 30. When investigators examined Brown's phone, they didn't find any data on it before May 28. Brown would remain on the force until he was arrested while on duty last month.

  • The LBPD told the Post that the call was "in accordance with the investigative practices that were in place at that time."

  • The Department would go on to say the detective that called Brown "was unaware that he was a Long Beach Police Officer and at no time during the call did Brown identify himself as an employee of LBPD."

  • Police would also say that "the detective did not learn of Brown's status as a police officer until later that day when she conducted additional follow-up after the call."
