LBUSD teacher arrested on suspicion of a deadly hit-and-run
A 55-year-old Long Beach Unified School District teacher has been arrested Thursday for allegedly fatally hitting a 78-year-old woman and leaving the scene.
Deborah Lisa Betance, a resident of Long Beach, faces one count of vehicular manslaughter with gross negligence for allegedly colliding into Jere Whitney, age 78, while she was in the crosswalk at the intersection of 4th Street and Ximeno Avenue on the night of Jul. 6, 2021.
When the police arrived, they found an injured Whitney lying in the street with significant injuries to her upper body. She died a few days later at a nearby hospital.
Betance, a teacher at Longfellow Elementary, fled from the scene in her orange Subaru Crosstrek, per the Post.
On May 27, 2022, detectives presented the case against Betance to the LA County District Attorney’s Office, which issued an arrest warrant. On July 13, detectives arrested and booked Betance into the Long Beach City Jail and her bail was set at $50,000.
