LGBTQ Center LB Hires New Executive Director
The LGBTQ Center Long Beach's board has selected Carlos Torres, the interim executive director of the Persad Center in Pittsburgh, to become the new executive director, the non-profit announced Wednesday.
Why it matters:
Porter Gilberg, the former executive director of the Long Beach LGBTQ Center, was ousted after a group called SaveTheCenterLB made up of former staff members, sent a letter detailing 60 incidents of “anti-Blackness within the organization” and how Porter created a “culture of intimidation and fear.” The Center installed Andrew Dorado as the interim director after Gilberg’s contract wasn’t renewed.
Torres will start on March 22; the Center said in a statement that Torres was selected after “an extensive recruitment and selection process," per the Grunion.
The Center will conduct a virtual press conference on April 8 to introduce Torres to Long Beach.
Gilberg has continued to deny all accusations.
