Long Beach City Council voted to rename sports complex after former Councilmember Dee Andrews
The Long Beach City Council voted 9-0 Tuesday to rename the sports complex at Chittick field after former councilmember Dee Andrews.
Why it matters:
Dee Andrews served on the Long Beach City Council for 13 years. Before entering the political arena, Andrews was a former star athlete from Long Beach Polytechnic High School who attended UCLA and California State University, Long Beach.
Andrews was the first African-American student body president at Poly High.
After a short career in the NFL, Andrews returned to Long Beach to teach at Poly High and Wilson.
Flashback: In November 2020, 8th District City Councilmember Al Austin requested that the council and Mayor Garcia change the name of the sports complex at Chittick Field in honor of Andrews, who secured the initial $10 million to rebuild the park.
The price tag to install a new sign is only $2,300; the facility's official name will become "Dee Andrews Sports Complex at Chittick Field."
