Long Beach unveils upgraded pride rainbow crosswalk
The intersection at Broadway and Junipero Avenue has a brighter, fresher colorful stripes from one side of the crosswalk to the other as Mayor Robert Garcia unveils the repainted pride crosswalk.
Why it matters:
June is pride month, and there have been reports that Long Beach’s three-mile gay enclave, colloquially known as the gayborhood, could be deemed an LGBTQ+ cultural district by the City Council.
The new pride crosswalk incorporates the colors of the Transgender Pride Flag and black and brown stripes for communities of color.
Mayor Robert Garcia, Council member Cindy Allen, and Project Management Bureau Manager Marilyn Surakus of Public Works rounded out city officials.
Community Organizer Jewels Long Beach, Trans Activist Sah’shey Alliyah Couture, and Miss Gay Pride Long Beach 2015 Mia Farrow attended the event.
