MacKenzie Scott gives $30 million to LBCC, largest in school history
MacKenzie Scott announced a new slate of donations for the third year in a row, totaling $2.74 billion, to 286 varied organizations, including Long Beach Community College.
Why it matters:
In 2019 Ms. Scott wrote a blog post on The Giving Pledge, in which she vowed after her divorce from Amazon CEO and richest human on the planet, Jeff Bezos, that she would donate her wealth "until the safe is empty." Since that statement, Scott has doled out over eight billion.
Ms.Scott contributed over $6 billion to 500 charities in 2020, per the NY Times.
Besides LBCC, Scott donated $40 million each to Cal Poly Pomona and Cal State Fullerton, which are the most significant gifts in the university's history and $15 million CSU Channel Islands.
LBCC will prioritize Scott's $3o million 'unrestricted gift' towards initiatives that:
Improve student academic outcomes by addressing racial equity gaps.
Engage in race-conscious and equity-minded practices that promote an inclusive and affirming campus environment.
Increase holistic support services for our most vulnerable students.
