Man arrested for allegedly stabbing an elderly woman to death in North Long Beach

Police said Saturday that Kevin Ngo, a 31-year-old Long Beach resident, has been charged with the murder of 78-year-old Paz Veliz.
Driving the news:
The Long Beach Police Department said officers arrived at the alley near the 2900 block of Coolidge Street at roughly 6:18 a.m. and came upon a 78-year-old woman with stab wounds to her upper body. When Long Beach Fire Department arrived on the scene, they determined the victim died.
A resident told officers he saw a person running away from the scene.
Police located a man that matched the suspect’s description and was apprehended as he was running towards the 91-Freeway near Paramount Boulevard. Police say a knife was recovered.
Detectives believe the victim was gathering recyclables when she was allegedly stabbed by Ngo. The suspect then fled on foot after residents began yelling for help.
Ngo is in Long Beach City Jail, charged with one count of murder and being held on a $2,000,000 bail.
