Man arrested for allegedly stabbing an elderly woman to death in North Long Beach

Police said Saturday that Kevin Ngo, a 31-year-old Long Beach resident, has been charged with the murder of 78-year-old Paz Veliz.

Driving the news:

The Long Beach Police Department said officers arrived at the alley near the 2900 block of Coolidge Street at roughly 6:18 a.m. and came upon a 78-year-old woman with stab wounds to her upper body. When Long Beach Fire Department arrived on the scene, they determined the victim died.

  • A resident told officers he saw a person running away from the scene.

  • Police located a man that matched the suspect’s description and was apprehended as he was running towards the 91-Freeway near Paramount Boulevard. Police say a knife was recovered.

  • Detectives believe the victim was gathering recyclables when she was allegedly stabbed by Ngo. The suspect then fled on foot after residents began yelling for help.

  • Ngo is in Long Beach City Jail, charged with one count of murder and being held on a $2,000,000 bail.
