Richardson seeks another term on the Long Beach City Council

9th District City Councilmember and Vice Mayor Rex Richardson announced on Thursday that he would run for re-election for his Long Beach City Council seat in 2022.

Details:

Richardson, a 38-year-old Democrat, who was first elected to his seat in 2014, was appointed to the South Coast Air Quality Management District last December and currently serves as the president of the Southern California Association of Governments.

Why it matters:

There was speculation about Mayor Garcia's future as either joining the Biden Administration or being appointed to fulfill Vice President Kamala Harris's old senate seat. That speculation opened the possibility of Richardson becoming acting mayor.
