Signal Hill police fatally shoot man near Sunnyside Cemetery

Signal Hill police fatally shot a man who allegedly stabbed a man near a Food4Less on Willow Street, Los Angeles County Sheriff's Department says.

SHPD officers were called to the Food4Less supermarket on the 1600 block of East Willow Street before 1 p.m. due to reports of a stabbing near the market's loading dock, per LBP.

  • Witness told the arriving officers the suspect fled the scene heading west on Willow Street.

  • An officer reached the suspect and attempted to apprehend him, but he ignored the officer and continued to walk away.

  • SHPD press release says the suspect was carrying a knife and "attacked the officer," at which time the officer shot the suspect.

Where things stand:

The shooting occurred near Sunnyside Cemetery on the 1000 block of Willow Street; Signal Hill police said the suspect was shot once in the upper body, but A witness says he heard six shots. The suspect would later die at the hospital.

  • Police say a large knife was recovered at the scene and that the stabbing incident does not appear to be gang-related.

  • The stabbing victim at the grocery store suffered a wound to his upper torso and he was transported to a local hospital. The victim remains in fair condition, SHPD says.
