The Long Beach Performing Arts Center could be renamed after former LB Mayor Beverly O'Neil
The Long Beach City Council voted unanimously to forward a recommendation from the Government, Personnel, and Elections Oversight Committee to rename the Long Beach Performing Arts Center after former Mayor Beverly O'Neill.
O'Neill, who served as mayor from 1996 to 2004, already has a theater within the performing arts center named after her. The recommendation for the change name comes from the Government and Elections oversight committee, an ad hoc committee chaired by former O'Neil Chief of Staff Randal Hernandez.
During the meeting, Councilmember Cindy Allen recommended that the committee alter the name change to add "performing arts" after having discussions with constituents.
The recommendation will return to the same committee within the next fewmonths.
What they're saying:
In their recommendation to the council, the committee wrote that the renaming is meant to commemorate Mayor O'Neil's 90th birthday and "that the City of Long Beach memorializes her extensive contributions to the city."
