The Nursing Home Industry is Lobbying for Immunity from COVID-19 Lawsuits
Nursing homes and long-term care facilities have become hotspots for the coronavirus as a result, the industry is facing a cascade of coronavirus inspired lawsuits raging from neglect to wrongful death, and the industry has responded back with one of the nation's largest lobbyist efforts.
What were seeing:
"At least 15 states" have passed laws or governors’ orders that give nursing homes and long-term care facilities some form of legal protection from lawsuits resulting from the coronavirus pandemic, per the AP.
The Federal Trade Commission issued an alert to consumers to be on the lookout for nursing homes and assisted living facilities that are requiring residents who are on Medicaid to sign over their Coronavirus stimulus checks
Why it matters:
A majority of the COVID-19 related deaths in Long Beach have been from elderly residents of long-term nursing homes.
50 of the 65 COVID-19 fatalities in Long Beach were residents of long-term care facilities
401 confirmed cases are linked to 24 Long Beach area long-term care facilities.
California state officials say 35% of COVID-19 deaths have occurred at senior living facilities, according to the S.F Chronicle.
